The Statues

Who rules the whimsyland of Central Park? The statues do. As the permanent residents, shepherds and sentinels of Central Park, the statues create and enforce the order of nonsense and whimsy. All statues serve as very capable guides.

Twenty-three Alice characters are reincarnated as statues in Central Park, all inspired by the books of Lewis Carroll and the illustrations of Sir John Tenniel. The Sophie Irene Loeb Fountain (dedicated in 1936) features thirteen and the Margarita Delacorte Memorial (dedicated in 1959) presents ten assembled in a cluster of six mushrooms. There are two statues of Alice, two of the White Rabbit and two of the Mad Hatter. The only other figure to have two statues in Central Park is Christopher Columbus. Alice and Christopher Columbus? This is "curiouser and curiouser!"
